Dänisch-Westindien / Dansk Vestindien Briefmarken
Danish West Indies was a colony of the Kingdom of Denmark in the Caribbean. The colony included some islands of what are now the American Virgin Islands in the Lesser Antilles. These were the islands of Saint Thomas, Saint John and Saint Croix. The first stamp of Danish West Indies was issued in 1856 and showed the same heraldic drawing as on the stamps of Denmark. The denominations on the stamps were given in Franc/Daler, later in Bit/Cent. There are many special uses for these stamps, as replenishment problems were frequent and the local postal administration had to improvise. The motifs on the stamps of Danish West Indies mainly showed portraits of Danish kings, coats of arms or ships. Often, the stamps simply showed the face value surrounded by rich ornaments and the Danish royal crown. On April 1, 1917, after a referendum, the Kingdom of Denmark sold the islands of Danish West Indies to the USA for the sum of 25 million US dollars. The stamps of Danish West Indies still have their collectors today, especially in Denmark and the USA.
